Chapter 11
Thy faithfulness is unto all generations: thou hast established the earth, and it abideth.
Psalm 119:90
* * *
It was weeks later, and they were at the Mud Sale, and it wasnât called a mud sale for no reason. Anita looked down to see clumps of mud stuck on her black boots. She had to be careful where she stepped so she wouldnât slip.
Hannah had gone ahead earlier with Libby, and Anita had arrived with Amos and the boys. Amos took the boys to look at something while Anita looked for Hannah and the candy stall.
âThere you are. Iâve been waiting for you to come. Where are the boys?â
âTheyâre with Amos somewhere. Iâm sure theyâll be by later.â Anita ran her gaze over the candies. She selected three bags of hard caramels, her favorite. âAre you here all day?â Anita asked when she handed Hannah the money.
âIâm here most of the day, but I do get a break for lunch at twelve.â
âIâll tell Amos when I see him. Heâd like to have lunch with you.â
When more people came to the stall, Anita walked away to give them some room to view the candy.
Anita heard the auction start in the main arena. She walked over, and when Simon came into view she leaned her back against a post to watch him. Anita figured she was far enough away so Simon wouldnât be able to see her. After half an hour of standing, she spotted a seat open up in the back row, so she sat down. Simon handled the job of auctioneer very well, and Anita knew it couldnât be his first time at it. He certainly was a handsome man; Anita could see why many girls in the community were fond of him.
When the auction was over, Anita walked away with the crowd leaving their seats. She had just bought an ice cream and was leaning against a tree eating it when she spotted Simon. He saw her at just the same moment, and made his way over to her.
âHave you been here all day?â he asked.
âIâve been here for a good while. I watched you for a little while at the auction. You did well.â
He grinned and looked down. âThink so?â
Once his eyes were fixed on hers again, she nodded.
âAre we allowed to be speaking with each other?â he said as he looked around.
âWeâll soon find out. Here he comes,â Anita said.
âThere you are.â Amos said looking at both of them. âLetâs go and have lunch.â
Simonâs eyebrows shot up. âMe too?â
Amos slapped him on the back. âOf course. Why not?â
Simon looked at Anita, and then smiled. âIâd love to have something to eat.â
They both followed Amos to the food tent.
Hannah was having a break from the candy stall and had saved them a table. Ben and Sam were sitting at the table with her. They all sat, ate, and had polite conversation.
âDo you think youâd be able to take a look at that buggy wheel for me, Simon?â Amos asked.
âJah I could.
